The Renewable Energy Foiler (REF)

The Renewable Energy Foiler (REF)

After our participation in the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge in 2021 and 2022, we recognized the critical need to enhance our boat’s autonomy. This insight led us to develop the Renewable Energy Foiler (REF), a three-seater hybrid solar-hydrogen boat on foils. With the design phase now complete, we have moved into production and aim to test the REF on the water by mid-2025. Our ultimate goal is to compete in the 2026 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge in the SeaLab category, which emphasizes performance and autonomy. This journey reaffirms our commitment to innovation and sustainable marine technology.

Technical Specifications

Technical Specifications icons and descriptions

The REF is designed to push the boundaries of what is possible in maritime transport. Key specifications include:

  • Capacity: 1 pilot and 2 passengers
  • Autonomy: 160 km
  • Fuel Cell: 60 kW
  • Solar Panels: 6 m²
  • Hydrogen Tanks: A 350 bars type IV tank containing a total of 8 kg of gaseous green hydrogen
  • Hybrid System: Solar-Green hydrogen powered
  • Foiling boat
  • Speed: Cruising speed of 25 knots, top speed of 35 knots

In the REF, hydrogen serves as the primary energy source, with solar panels assisting in recharging the batteries. This approach supports our long-term vision of achieving autonomous port operations through vehicle-to-grid technology, enhancing overall energy efficiency.

Upcoming Milestones

As part of our journey with the REF, we aim to create the Green Ribbon event—an environmentally respectful race dedicated to boats operating on renewable energies. This event will follow the model of the existing Blue Ribbon speed challenge and bring together participants who have successfully innovated sustainable transportation solutions who need to successfully complete a round trip from Geneva to Bouveret (160 km).

Further milestones :

  • 2024-2025 : Production of the boat
  • 2025 : Integration of the subsystems and first tests on Lake Geneva
  • 2026 : First time for the Green Ribbon
  • Competing in the 2026 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge in the SeaLab class
